Saint-Germain-des-Prés metro station was one of the few RATP stations dedicated to cultural activities, and therefore free of advertising. As a tribute to and echo of the Saint-Germain district, historically the home of publishers and literature - the encyclopaedists were already meeting there in the Age of Enlightenment - we were asked to create an installation based on all the known signs produced by mankind. We inventoried all the glyphs known to exist, from dead languages to the Internet era, and displayed them in the station's windows. Thanks to our partnership with the Bnf, they have been illustrated by reproductions of exceptional items from its collections, such as Egyptian papyri that we have surrounded with hieroglyphs. At the same time, we projected the word ‘world’ in every language onto the station's vaults: in Sumerian, for example, it is the same word as the word for a field, a sign of the evolution of our conceptualisation of what surrounds us.
