A typeface for Notre Dame
We proposed and implemented a typeface program based on the graphic and ornamental heritage bequeathed by Viollet-le-Duc, which is very much in evidence in the restored wall decorations of the chapels in the heart. The letters drawn in this way have a familiarity with the highly architectural characters of Roman capitals, but are also inspired by the curves of the uncials or tourneur letters found in medieval manuscripts.
The design principle revolves around a slider that allows the proportion of roman and uncial to be adjusted, while maintaining overall coherence. A “stained glass” version is specially designed for the brand's titling and typogram needs.
